Problems solved

Problem areas:

Water in confined areas (e.g. fish tank, pond or lake) has a certain level of organic waste and nutrients which affect the quality of the water. These compounds, also referred to as Dissolved Organic Compounds (DOC) results from decomposed plant matter, fertilisers, fish fodder and excretions from farmed fish, which have been broken down and dissolved in the water. The DOC cannot be seen by the naked eye; however, once the level is high enough, the effects can be seen in the water.

High levels of DOC are undesirable in the water as it leads to:

  • Build up of toxic substances affecting the fish and its health
  • Less oxygen in the water
  • Decreased clarity and decolourization of the water
  • Unpleasant smell and taste
  • Increased growth of algae, bacteria and plants

Altogether, this results in unhealthy conditions for the fish, affecting both health and growth conditions of the fish. Many devices and procedures exist to remove some of these effects (e.g. mechanical, chemical or biological filters, or simply exchange of water), but Protein Skimmers remain the preferred choice for reducing the organic waste from water.

Clarity’s procedure:

Protein Skimmers work on the principle that most DOC and nutrients in the water have bipolar properties, meaning that one part of the compound prefers air (hydrophobic) and the other part prefers water (hydrophilic). These properties are exploited through the use of air bubbles that Claritys Protein Skimmer produce. The compounds are attracted to these bubbles, attaches to them and when sufficient DOC has been bound to the airbubbles, stable foam is created and collected through the Foam Fractionator. The trick is that smaller air bubbles gives a larger total surface area and therefore a more effective Protein Skimmer. Clarity does this better than any competitor through its unique and patented design.
